MY STORY
Freshman year of college I lost 15lbs. and I was so excited. I spent most of my life as the heavier kid, and I felt like I was finally taking control of my own appearance. I was going to the gym regularly and felt like I was finally seeing results. However, what I didn’t want to acknowledge is that my body was super sick, and wasn’t properly absorbing any nutrients; hence the weight loss. My Crohn’s Disease was the worst it has ever been and food was exiting my body faster than I could even process it. When I finally got on a medication and got my Crohn’s in remission, the weight loss stopped. I was still happy with what I was seeing on the scale until about halfway through fall semester of sophomore year. Things took a turn for the worse. I had an app where I tracked every single calorie I put into my body. I would workout at Planet Fitness and then drive to the Rec on campus for another short workout and sweat session in the sauna. No matter what I did my weight was spirally upwards. That was the lowest my self-esteem had ever been, and I gained 30lbs. in about 6 months. It was finally suggested by a friend that I get my thyroid levels tested, since my mom is hypothyroid. I made an appointment a week later and sure enough I was diagnosed as hypothyroid as well. This explained the excessive weight gain even on strict diet and exercise, and the constant drowsiness. My doctor assured me that getting on Synthroid would plateau my weight loss – and it did. But, I have now had to work my ass off for over a year before finally shedding some of the weight I put on during that time. I leaned on my friends to workout with me and hold me consistent, as well as a select few influencers on Instagram that inspired me to try new workouts and feel more comfortable in a gym atmosphere. I made a conscious effort to not follow anyone on social media that I thought I would negatively compare myself to and prevent me from pushing myself in a healthy way. The main goal of this website is to show off some of the resources that have helped me crawl out of one of the lowest points in my life. Not all fitness influencers have negative effects on their followers. It’s all about finding those who motivate you to do your best and feel your best.
